Following a zero-waste lifestyle might prevent you from doing some of the regular activities that other people do which leads to a lot of trash (plastic bags\cups\packaging...), but there is really good activities that you can do in order to have fun while reducing waste, saving money and developing skills!
In this article I'm sharing with you four of these activities with visual explanations made by me.
I. Knitting
Fast fashion nowadays is available almost all over the world, too cheap that people can afford it, and that leads to buying more clothes than we actually need, after a while these clothes will end up as a waste polluting our planet, however, if you're someone who's willing to reduce the amount of waste then here is the good news, you can help by stop supporting the industry of cheap and trendy clothing and enjoy creating your own clothes by knitting.
Knitting is a common way to create clothes, have you ever thought about knitting your own outfit instead of supporting the fast-fashion industry? By knitting your own clothes you'll be reducing waste, fast-fashion is focused on speed and low costs in order to deliver the trendy outfits, and that of course has a negative environmental impact, water pollution, the use of toxic chemicals in the manufacturing process and wasting more textile.
Knitting is a chance to slow down, quick manufacturing, fast fashion, fast food, work... we are doing all of this in a hurry, knitting is also a great way to slow down and feel the very moment, I consider it as a relaxing activity, you can also invite your friends\family to knit together and have fun.
Creating your own clothes will make it more valuable for you because you worked really hard for it and you've seen the whole process, from the yarn rolls into the last picture which may be socks, sweater, crop top or any other different clothing, and last but not least you'll also be developing knitting skills which are rare today.
So maybe next time you can choose knitting over fast fashion, that's up to you!
II. Growing your own food\herbs
How you can make a salad? Have you ever thought about it in a different way, not by getting out of the house to the grocery store and pick up all the ingredients and then cut it all together... there is another way make salad that we almost forgot: planting.
Same as knitting, planting is a chance to slow down, be patient and wait until the plant is ready to be picked, and it's a chance to enjoy the full experience of planting food, from seeds to ripe fruits.
Planting is a fun activity that will connect you with nature, you don't need to waste in order to plant, you can even create your garden from reusing\recycling waste and from food scraps, creating a garden means that you need to spend more time outside, planning and taking care of the plants, it's also enjoyable, you'll be surprised too often, you'll start to explore different kinds of plants, you can start growing your own vegetables, fruits and herbs instead of buying the packaged ones from the store.
III. Making natural & homemade recipes
Food recipes, body lotions, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, perfume, cleaning products, remedies and more, can be made using natural ingredients, maybe herbs from your garden, vegetables that might be good for the skin... you can look on the internet or read books that will help you to make your own recipes at home, with no need to buy it packaged in plastic bottles, and of course it will be chemical-free, which is great for you and for the environment, making recipe is an entertainment activity, mixing different ingredients so you can get something good out of it.
Sounds fun & eco-friendly!
IV. Cook your own food instead of choosing takeaway
If you have some free time and you're capable of cooking your own food, then it will be another activity to do instead of buying packaged meals, you can invite your friends, family or suppose and cook together, you can try new recipes to make it more fun and existing, and just after a while of repeating that you'll be a good cooker and learn new things.
Of course, dining out is not wrong, but there is a few eco-friendly options out there, especially if you decide to eat at a fast food restaurant, but if you love to dine out that totally okay, you can do that by letting them know that you don't like to get a single-use straw\plastic cup or any other kinds of single-use products they offer you... or you can choose a green restaurant if it's available.
There are more activities that we can enjoy with no waste, you are the one who choose, you can always look for alternatives and solutions because nature doesn't deserve to be full of waste.
At the end, I want to thank you for being someone who cares to reduce waste, sending love your way.
